چکیده

A central problem in ecology is explaining the causes of population fluctuations, and an important step in the solution is determining the structure of the negative feedback (density dependent) process regulating population dynamics. The conventional way to determine the dimension or order of density dependence in a time series is to calculate the partial autorcorrelation function (PACF). We maintain, however, that PACF is not designed with biological populations in mind and has the wrong null model for detecting the structure of density dependence. We suggest an alternative diagnostic, the partial rate correlation function (PRCF), which is specifically designed for biological populations and has an appropriate null model for detecting their density dependent structures. Tests with simulated data show PRCF to be superior to PACF in detecting the underlying density dependent structure of two simple mathematical models.

VC-dimension and structural risk minimization for the analysis of nonlinear ecological models

The problem of distinguishing density-independent (DI) from density-dependent (DD) demographic time series is important for understanding the mechanisms that regulate populations of animals and plants. We address this problem in a novel way by means of Statistical Learning Theory. First, we estimate the VC-dimensions of the best known nonlinear ecological models through the methodology proposed...

A Bayesian modeling approach for determining productivity regimes and their characteristics.

Oscillations in the environment result in substantial alterations to population dynamics as evidenced by time series of abundance and recruitment. Depending on the reference timescale, these oscillations are referred to as regime shifts. Regime shifts may occur on very short time scales and are often undetected for several years. Consequently, tools that allow the estimation of regime-specific ...

Dynamic characterization and predictability analysis of wind speed and wind power time series in Spain wind farm

The renewable energy resources such as wind power have recently attracted more researchers’ attention. It is mainly due to the aggressive energy consumption, high pollution and cost of fossil fuels. In this era, the future fluctuations of these time series should be predicted to increase the reliability of the power network. In this paper, the dynamic characteristics and short-term predictabili...

Time-dependent analysis of carrier density and potential energy in spherical centered defect InGaAs/AlGaAs quantum dot (SCDQD)

Interaction and correlation effects in quantum dots play a fundamental role in defining both their equilibrium and transport properties. Numerical methods are commonly employed to study such systems. In this paper we investigate the numerical calculation of quantum transport of electrons in spherical centered defect InGaAs/AlGaAs quantum dot (SCDQD). The simulation is based on the imaginary time...
